A new name in orchid science
Ponthieva ravenii is a newly described orchid species from Yanachaga Chemillén National Park in central Peru. Its description appeared in Phytotaxa on October 21, 2026, in a paper by Luis Valenzuela Gamarra, Rodolfo Vásquez Martínez and Rocío del Pilar Rojas Gonzáles.
The publication date marks the formal scientific description. It does not establish that the plant was first encountered in the field that week.
The details are in the flower
The authors describe a terrestrial, or ground-growing, orchid and distinguish it through the structure of its sepals, petals and lip. A prominent feature is a broad lip divided into two large, symmetrical lobes.
The paper compares the plant with similar members of the Ponthieva rostrata group. It also includes illustrations, distribution and ecological information, a preliminary conservation assessment and an identification key. The publicly accessible abstract does not give enough detail to reproduce that conservation assessment here.
A discovery story, not a new houseplant recommendation
The description is botanical news, not an announcement of a commercially released orchid. We have not verified nursery availability or a cultivation protocol for this species, so this report does not offer a temperature, watering schedule or potting mix for it.
For a separate, practical guide to a familiar indoor orchid, see repotting a Phalaenopsis. Its care instructions should not be transferred to this newly described ground-growing plant. Another recent naming story concerns the giant waterlily Victoria colombiana.
